Why Do My Light Bulbs Keep Burning Out?

Why Do My Light Bulbs Keep Burning Out?

Some types of light bulb will serve you for an extended period, whereas others will only last for a few years, or a few months. LED light bulbs usually have the longest lifespan, lasting for over a decade. Compact fluorescent bulbs are several times better than their conventional incandescent bulbs. Consequently, halogen bulbs are relatively expensive but offer increased energy efficiency as well as a longer lifespan.

We all expect our light bulbs to last for a considerable amount of time. However, this is not always the case. If you have recently installed new bulbs in your home and the lifespan doesn’t seem to be what you expect, it’s highly likely that your home has some electrical issues. So, what could be causing your light bulbs to burn out so often? Read the article and inform yourself.

Excessive voltage:

If the voltage supply to your premises is massive, your light bulbs will always burn brighter. However, they will also tend to blow out much faster. With a voltage tester at your disposal, you can safely test for voltage at your electrical outlet. Of course, this can be a tricky venture and if you aren’t certain about doing this, just contact a Quick Spark electrician for assistance. We can help you to locate the source of the problem and conduct immediate repairs accordingly.

Bad light bulbs:

In some instances, the answer is as simple as a bad collection of bulbs. Though compact fluorescent bulbs are comparatively better than the traditional incandescent light bulbs, they are prone to regular burnouts, especially if switched on and off frequently. You’ll want to replace them with energy-efficient and long-lasting LED lights.

The bulb is tightly screwed to the fixture:

Having your light bulbs tightly screwed to the fixture can potentially result in the bulbs burning out more regularly. Of course, it is good to create good contact between the fixture and the bulb; however, an excessive fixture-to-bulb force of contact can result in problems. To be more precise, when you have your light bulb tightly screwed, the metal tab inside the socket will be forced to bend back resulting in an incorrect connection with the bulb. This will eventually result in some sort of electrical arc which can reduce the bulb’s lifespan. You’ll have to contact a qualified electrical expert to examine your lighting fixture to determine if they are properly fitted.

Excess vibration:

Filament lighting fixtures are usually extremely delicate, especially the cheaply manufactured ones. With time, mechanical vibrations can result in sudden blowouts because they cause the filament to break. Vibrations may originate from nearby appliances and sound waves, among other sources. If you notice that vibration is the primary cause of frequent bulb blowouts in your home, switch to the use of LED bulbs which are equipped with heavy-duty filaments that can withstand excessive vibration.

Poor electrical home wiring:

Poor electrical wiring is a highly complex issue that is not only difficult to diagnose but equally difficult to correct or repair. You would want to ensure you have a qualified and highly experienced electrician at your disposal to help you tackle the whole problem. Loose wiring in your light fixture can potentially cause the voltage going to the bulb to fluctuate; a phenomenon that makes a light bulb wear out pretty fast.

The problem of overheating:

Generally, excessive buildup of heat is a potential danger to the longevity of your lighting fixtures. The issue of overheating is usually common with recessed ceiling lights, and this is because there is usually no room for the heat to escape – except into the ceiling. This means that if there are any blockages caused by insulation, your bulbs will eventually overheat and burn out. You will need to contact your local electrician to help solve this type of problem.

These are the most common causes of regular bulb burnouts. These are not the types of electrical repair projects you can handle yourself. Whether it is just a simple light bulb replacement, or a complex circuit breaker repair, it is highly advisable to have all your electrical repair problems diagnosed and repaired by a qualified expert.
