What do I need to think about when choosing a ceiling fan?

Ceiling fans are a great way to add style and cool down your house, but not only that; they can also save money in the summer by you being able to lower your air conditioning temperature by 4 degrees without sacrificing comfort. There are several features you should look for when buying a ceiling fan, such as size, blade angle (pitch), color, etc.,

It is crucial to know how much space you have available before purchasing one. Some models take up more room than others – depending on their build design. This might become an issue if there are additional jobs – like a loft conversion. So it is important to be clear on the ceiling space that you have available.

1. Location

Where will the fan be situated? Will it hang from your ceiling or will you install a wall fan in either an indoor space like a sunroom, laundry room, or workout area. If you’re looking for an outdoor option that can also work indoors with high humidity areas such as in your laundry or workout rooms, then consider getting a wet-rated fan, which is suitable to use when direct exposure to water is possible.

2. Motor

There are two types of motors, AC and DC. The difference is that DC doesn’t use as much electricity. However, they can still be extremely loud if people in the room want to talk without yelling, or have a conversation on their phone.

3. Airflow

A fan’s output should be determined by airflow and efficiency. Airflow is measured in cubic feet per minute, while the latter refers to how many air molecules are moved relative to the power consumption of a particular model. The higher these numbers go – along with other features such as blade pitch (angle) or size- the better your home will feel on hot afternoons, thanks to the cooling breeze provided by the fan.

4. Control

Some fans are controlled by remote, others with buttons on the wall, or they have multiple controls. The outputs you choose will depend on your personal preference and style of fan – but whichever one suits you best is sure to offer some additional convenience in adjusting lighting speed and direction of blades for extra comfort.

5. Blades

The designs of the blades on your fan have a significant impact on how much air they move. Knives come in all shapes and sizes, but the most efficient ones are three-bladed; because they create less drag than those with more numerous blades. If you want something that looks nice and functions well, go for a 3 blade fan.

6. Size

There are many ceiling fans with different blade spans and designs to fit any home. To find the perfect fan for your living room, bathroom, or bedroom, make sure you know what size ceiling space you have before deciding on a purchase. If it is smaller than 400 square feet, then choose from 36-inch blades up to 42″. For larger spaces over 200 sq ft., which includes large family rooms choose 52″ – 54” blades in length.

For maximum comfort, you should consider more than one fan to handle your cooling requirements. For long or large rooms, the fans should be placed as close to the center of the room as possible and keep blade tips at least 18 inches from any wall. Ceilings lower than 8 feet will require a downrod extension for an eight-foot ceiling height so that it is seven feet above floor level – perfect!
