Power Outages: What To Do Before & During

Power outages can cause big trouble for you. These can happen in winter and/or summer. When the power goes out, you must know what to do to keep everyone safe in your home. It is advisable to do your preparation before power outages get a chance to occur; because these can happen at any time.

In this article, we’ve outlined some of the key things you should do before and during power outages.

Before A Power Outage

Want to get yourself ready for power outages? You must get some things done before the power outages, such as:

  • You should have an emergency kit and it must contain all the essential things. In an emergency kit, have a waterproof torch, battery-powered radio, and a first aid kit. You can also customize the first aid kit to meet all your needs.
  • Get enough supplies of food and water before the power outage. It becomes easier for everyone to survive when the power occurs. There should be at least 10 liters of water per person.
  • You must ensure the safety of each member of your family. For this reason, get a disaster prep kit that will be useful during the power outage. This kit may include flashlights, bottled water, and food.
  • Want to be able to deal with a power outage? Invest in a durable generator to supply power to your home for the duration of a power outage. Choose to buy a whole house generator because it has an auto mechanism.
  • Before a power outage, make sure to keep your necessary electrical equipment fully charged. For instance, keep your mobile phones charged.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Purchase one that comes with a battery backup.

Consult a professional electrician to learn  what should be included in the emergency kit before a power outage.

During A Power Outage

A power outage can cause distress for everyone in your home. There are some things you must do to keep everyone safe.

  • If there is any sparking, make sure to stay away from power lines.
  • You should avoid using candles because it can be risky in the case of a power outage.
  • A generator can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Therefore, keep it away from windows and doors.
  • During a power outage, the freezer or fridge will keep your food cold for a few hours. So you should keep them closed. The other alternative is to use a cooler with ice.
  • Turn off your electrical equipment or appliances. When the power returns, it may cause spikes or surges. This  can lead to damage.

When the power returns, keep yourself and your family away from power lines. Most importantly, make sure there’s no sign of danger outside your house. Turn on your mains switch to ensure there’s no tripped circuit breaker. Hire a professional electrical contractor to fix the electrical problems, if any.
